This week’s latest sign that stadium designers are focused on everything but the game is an aquarium at the Marlins’ new stadium. It was long thought that an aquarium or tank would be positioned somewhere behind the outfield wall, but this bit excess really takes the cake.

Now you and your kids can be entertained by diverse marine life, while Hanley Ramirez is timing the pitcher in the on deck circle. Honestly, if I were a batter I would take Willie Stargell’s sledge hammer to the place (after I took the fish out and put them in a more natural environment).

personally hate all the contrived marketing shit…pools, fish tanks…even the glove and coke bottle at ATT not a fan of—seems to me to be a complete waste of money—especially at those parks that are heavily subsized by the taxpayers–
Off topic question ML—collective bargaining agreement is end of 2011 I believe—from your perspective any items that are in play that have an impact on where the A’s will play (or if they continue to play) going forward?
I feel for those fish when a foul ball goes smacking onto those tanks.
The fish tank, Coke bottle, etc. drive home the point that the game is not entertainment enough. An amusement park atmosphere is needed to bring in people who don’t care about baseball. They bring the same money as the real fans.
@GoA’s – There really aren’t the same kinds of hot button issues facing MLB and MLBPA that there are for NFL and NBA. Greater revenue sharing may be on the table, my guess is that it’s maxed out as it is (percentages dropped from the 2002 to 2006 versions of the CBA). I imagine that Selig sleeps well at night.
only asked because I had heard a rumor…friend of a friend…so take it for what its worth…that he (meaning BS) wants to wait until the CBA is in play before making a decision…but no one could answer why…other than its a reason not to have to make a decision—
@GoA’s – Selig will always have the contraction card in his back pocket if he feels that stadium situations aren’t moving fast enough. In this case that means the A’s and Rays. It’s a hollow threat, but a threat nonetheless. If either team gets a deal done, the card loses value because two franchises have to be contracted simultaneously.
And they said no to teal seats?
Sheesh, now the Rays will want an aquarium too, the Diamondbacks will want a snake pit, the Orioles, Blue Jays and Cards will want aviaries, and the Cubs will want a minaiture bear pit.
Haha “minaiture bear pit”. That was pure gold! In that case the A’s should get an elephant behind the centerfield wall!
