Wolff on KLIV’s CEO show tonight at 7

Lew Wolff makes the rounds on the radio again, appearing on KLIV-1590 AM’s The CEO Show tonight at 7. He’ll probably talk A’s, Quakes, and Moneyball. I don’t think I’ll be able to listen to it live, but the podcast is usually available shortly after the interview is recorded. The host of The CEO Show is SVLG head Carl Guardino, a notable A’s-to-San Jose supporter and general Valley booster.

  1. more table-setting for MLB’s upcoming approval of San Jose?

  2. I don’t think we can assume anything

  3. @pjk,
    Let’s all hope so..aloha!

  4. This whole situation has turned me into Doubting Thomas, I need to see something before I believe anything that is rumored about the stadium and the A’s in general.

  5. Maybe somebody should ask Wolff why the A’s didn’t pursue a guy like Adrian Beltre, who hit 3 HRs today. Oh, wait a second….

  6. @Pjk – He got more money (than the A’s were offering) from the Rangers.

  7. Gee, I wonder if Lew will actually say anything new this time or simply spout out the same old crap about how the A’s can’t possibly play in Oakland since there are no viable sites, and he knows because he studied them all in great detail? About how Billy, in whom he trusts so completely, will definitely get the best players he can afford, except maybe Willingham (who actually wants to stay, is affordable and has shown he can hit HR’s in the Coliseum), but they can’t really spend any money because they have to save it all for the big move to SJ (despite Fisher being filthy rich and despite being given millions in welfare support by the MLB). About how the A’s fans are so great but there just aren’t very any of them (since Schott and Hoffmann started threatening right after they bought the team that they had to move out — think there’s any correlation with that and the A’s declining attendance?). And too bad about losing all of the A’s fans — they’ll just create a whole new fan base in a town that has always been pro-Giants.

I have read it all and heard it all from Wolff and there is no way I’d waste ten seconds of my time listening to that blowhard whine about how tough it is to destroy a franchise.

  8. @Jerry You make a good point about them not being able to sign players because they have to save up money for SJ. It makes it look like the MO going forward will be more of the same. How about giving the many fans who are skeptical a little faith by signing Willingham? At least make a friggin effort for gods sake. Not doing so only reinforces the cheapskate sterotype IMO.

  9. Riddle:

Notwithstanding his small ownership percentage, why would Beane stay in Oakland if other GM opportunities like the Chicago Cubs, the Boston Red Sox, and the Anaheim Angeles exist? And current ownership would allow him to leave?

  10. apparently., Beltre used the A’s offer to get higher offers from other teams, without any intention to actually sign with Oakland – Beltre didn’t want to play in the Coliseum

  11. Can’t blame Beltre. He did what any highly sought after professional athlete would do. Put yourself in his shoes – Texas v. Oakland – no brainer. The last time the A’s won a bidding war with a free agent was with Esteban Loiza (the Giants were courting him as well).

  12. @RS Because the team has been told the decision is soon… like they’ve been told over the past 2.5 years. The question is, why is he choosing to believe them this time?

  13. @gojohn10 I’ve never heard Beane state publicly that a decision is soon until September. I’ve heard several others in the organization, but never Beane. gojohn10 I’m disappointed you didn’t answer my riddle.

  14. If Beane knew the answer was a bad one, one that has the A’s in the Coli for many more years, with low payroll and 5/8 empty seats, don’t you think he would be out with his scouting uniform on with resume in hand?

  15. @Rayburn – Is the grass going to be greener in Chicago and Boston? And what i mean by “greener” is – would Beane get a piece of the ownership like in Oakland? Is that money/stock too good to walk away from?

  16. …if you see “Moneyball,” you’ll see that Beane turned $12.5 mill from the Red $ox. Think he’s making anything close to that with the A’s?

  17. …FWIW, Beane wants to be where he can build a competitive team. Having to endure many more years of losing out on players because they don’t want to play in an empty football stadium should have him packing his bags. If the A’s get the OK for San Jose, I’ll bet Beane stays.

  18. @RS I’m trying to play Devil’s advocate. After years of waiting I can’t help but do so. Beane et al have stated the answer is the coming soon, but has the answer already been given in private? If so, clearly the answer is SJ, but perhaps the finality of a decision is reason alone for Beane to sound excited. I would think that is not the case, but after six years of this I’ve been conditioned not to trust my hunches.

  19. @RS,
You da man brah! Beane staying cuz SJ happening (I love da islands!). I’ll check in later to see what Wolff has to say about da latest. Shaka!

  20. Tony D.,

Can you send me some malasadas from Leonard’s?

  21. @dk,
Had some from Napoleons near Zippy’s in Kahului. Da bomb to say the least. Hope to find the same in the SJ area upon returning home (sorry RM for going OT; no more on this thread).

  22. Leonard’s… Zippy’s, you guys are making me homesick:)

  23. Okay, lets put the Zippy’s talk aside for a bit, so what did LW say in the interview? You guys know I can’t stomach listening to this guy for more than 10 seconds, so you pro-SJ guys will have to do my dirty work for me.
