What about Bob?

Today’s one of those rare occasions when I will post on the team instead of economics. So here it goes:

Another backup catcher named Bob? At least this one has actually taken a team to the playoffs.

  1. About time. 9-game losing streak? Or is it 10?

  2. Wow, I don’t believe BB pulled the trigger so early. I figured he’d wait till we drop at least our 20th straight. Now we need more good news that BS picks the VC site.

  3. ….Only if BS picks the VC site and there is a solid financing plan in place. So far, nobody is aware of one…As if A’s fans don’t endure enough pain with this stadium thing dragging on for years, now the team loses every game…At some point, apathy has to set in…

  4. OT: I want a Jemile Weeks dreads wig.

  5. Its about time! Something all A’s fans can agree to. Hopefully the good news continues and SJ announces soon they have ALL the land in place for Cisco Field.
By the way, how are those land acquisitions, business relocations going at VC? Sorry RM, couldn’t help it.

  6. “I personally love the way he deals with everybody. It’s a long season. He’s had some long seasons. I love the guy. He’s a good teacher. I love everything about him. He’s a very solid person, and I like the way he deals with everything all year long. This is a hard job.”
Lew Wolff 2 weeks ago, talking about Bob Geren…lmao. Who can fire LW? Fisher, the mystery owner that no one has really seen, ever?

  7. bye bye Geren!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. re: the quote above …. Lew lied!!

Can we believe anything he says?

  9. re: Fisher, the mystery owner that no one has really seen, ever?

…Why would Fisher want to become a public figure when so many in the East Bay have demonized him for being unwilling to dispose of his family fortune just to Oakland can have a free ballpark? The “John Fisher is rich…” plan seems to be the preferred ballpark financing “option” of Oakland-only ballpark advocates.

  10. Good for the A’s and their fans to see Geren go. He had multiple issues with several players over the last 4 years.

Geren knows how to kiss ass but he never understood what it took to motivate and relate to pro baseball players.

Kissing ass and being political is different than managing. For those like BB and LW all they see is the political piece and do not see the on-field stuff as clearly as one would like to think.

No one can make LW build in Oakland. He refuses to work with the City/County. Regardless if BS picks VC it is irrelevant because LW won’t build there…

  11. @pjk — because Fisher is a Giants fan. He has publicly said that his grand-parents, his parents and he himself are Giants fans and he “loves” AT&T Park.

  12. re: because Fisher is a Giants fan.
    .
..Big deal. So he also likes the Giants. What does that mean – that he doesn’t also like the A’s? Who doesn’t love ATT Park? It’s what we’d ;like to see for the A’s….Why don’t you find somebody new to own the A’s – someone willing to not only plunk down $300 mill of their own money for the franchise but another $500 mill to build a ballpark – sans public and corporate support – in Oakland?…Walter O’Malley grew up a Giants fan. He ended up owning the Dodgers. I’m betting the original Mets owners grew up Dodgers fans.

  13. “Why don’t you find somebody new to own the A’s”
Why do you post questions like this? Its illogical to ask a regular person, an A’s fan, a question like this. Its a diversion.

  14. I have never been to AT&T.

    Sincerely,

    Oakland Athletics fan.

  15. @ML – Half of our baseball team just ran in my classroom to tell me about Geren. They love me. My Teaching is first-rate and irrelevant to the topic above, or sports in general.

  16. re: Its illogical to ask a regular person, an A’s fan, a question like this. Its a diversion.

…Why is it unreasonable to expect you to scout out and find someone new to buy the A’s and give Oakland a free ballpark? “Regular” persons can accomplish some great things. Complaining about the existing ownership doesn’t solve anything, does it? You don’t like the A’s owners because they don’t want to give Oakland a free ballpark. I’m betting no one else will come forward to meet these terms, either.

  17. I do know a few millionaires, but none of them are sports fans. Why don’t you get some SJ Ballpark supporters to get Selig to act?

  18. ….SJ ballpark supporters have done all they can at this point. I’ve already spoken to a current San Jose official, two former SJ mayors and an MLB official. But Bud Selig doesn’t even make his email address readily available…Surely, you can convince your millionaire friends that donating a ballpark to Oakland is a great idea?

  19. @ML – You referenced my teaching and whether my “tin hat” was visible. Our team is pretty split between A’s fans and Giants fans. We sling mud back and forth, but generally stick to our practice routine. I usually don’t talk sports when teaching in the classroom, so, no.

  20. “wingnut?” and you wanna get upset for me saying “meh?” c’mon Mr. Cronkite, you can do better than that …

  21. @David- Last I checked the A’s owners want to move to San Jose and have funding in place plus a site. Also didn’t Mayor Chuck Reed just send BS a letter a month ago asking about a decision?

    Wingnut leanings? Thats pretty funny…

  22. @Sid – I wasn’t the one who used that word.

    @ML – i’m gonna email you.

  23. Bye Bob! Don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out…

Hey when was the last time the A’s fired their manager mid season?

  24. @Dan, Jackie Moore in 1986. Hired LaRussa mid season that year.

  25. @Sid, what is the funding method for a stadium in San Jose. How does that work?

  26. David, AT&T is an awesome place to watch a game. You should go… especially when the A’s are playing 🙂 That’s when I go!
    .
And for the record, base don the things I know about you, I imagine you are the kind of guy I would love to have teaching my daughters. Critical thinking, that is a key component of education that so many folks miss out on. Clearly, you aren’t one of the folks that misses out on that.

  27. Rejoice!

@Jeffrey: Its safe to say Weeks has the best hair since Coco shaved the sides of his head. lol

  28. @LeAndre… the CoFro and JemDreads would be the greatest hair tag team of all time. I am getting a wig, dude.

  29. For just one thread, can we lay off oakland vs. the world bs and enjoy the Geren firing?

  30. @Jeffrey – thanks man!
re: AT&T – its had three names and i haven’t gone in there yet. I don’t see any reason to start.

  31. “i haven’t gone in there yet. I don’t see any reason to start.”
Why wouldn’t you go there when the A’s are playing? Do you have a blanket policy of boycotting A’s road games? If you happened to be in Texas or Seattle and the A’s were in town, you wouldn’t go?

  32. I do not support the SF Giants in any way (they will not get any of my money). When the A’s play there, I watch on TV… weekend after next, I’ll be at the Coli … or, the O.co Coliseum.

  33. I have seen the A’s in Texas and Anaheim. I would love to see them at Wrigley or Fenway!

    • I have seen the A’s in Texas and Anaheim. I would love to see them at Wrigley or Fenway!

I saw the A’s at Fenway. While going to Fenway was great, I didn’t see another A’s fan all night.

  34. @Jesse,
Don’t play strawman! Wolff has stated that he has the financing lined up for Cisco Field in SJ.
That’s good enough for me (but obviously not good enough for you…oh well).

  35. I hate giving the G’s money too, and have been to At&T only 6 times, 5 of those against the A’s. It’s a beautiful park, but one major problem: it’s filled with those idiot bandwagon Giant fans. I’ll take our decrepit old Coliseum over that place any time cuz it’s our shrine, with our rich history with our awesome fans. Get a new VC yard and it would be pure heaven.

  36. ATT Park is right down the street from my office. I can see it out the window and tell you all how much it costs to park on game days. The last time I was there, the Expos beat the Giants, with Bartolo Colon on the mound. You can look up how long ago that was…(When I see throngs of Giants fans ready to spend $$ in the neighborhood, it makes it so laughable to read the Fremont Citizens Network’s nonsense about how a ballpark brings “crime and chaos” to a neighborhood. I’d be in big trouble if that were the case.)

  37. I have seen the A’s in Fenway, AT&T Park and Yankee Stadium. The Fenway and Yankee stadium trip was on the weekend of Rickey Henderson’s HoF induction, so I saw all kinds of A’s fans at both. It was really the awesomest alignment of the planets I could have ever imagined. Here is what I thought of the trip at the time

  38. I go to Fenway every year to see the A’s. I’m usually the only one wearing an A’s hat. Getting tickets at Fenway is near impossible for the important games, so it is the one time I’m happy I support a rather anonymous team. As far as Fenway goes, I think the ambiance is great, the neighborhood is fantastic, it reeks of history, and it looks good on T.V.– but the sightlines are terrible, the seats are cramped, and it kind of reeks in general. It stirs civil unrest when you suggest it here, but they really should blow it up and build a new one.

  39. comment from Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal today shows the dire circumstances the A’s face:

“No free agent comes to Oakland if given a better option. Even young players dread the thought of playing at the Coliseum. Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton, for example, has four teams on his no-trade list. Naturally, the A’s are one.”

  40. I did the Yankee/Rickey HOF/Fenway journey too, and I’ve seen them in SF, Anaheim, LA, SD, and Baltimore with Detroit coming up in a month.

  41. In today’s Trib (and Mercury News), there’s a little piece on new skipper Bob Melvin’s somewhat praise for the Coliseum. He’s my age, 49, and remebers the Day on the Green concerts in the 70s’ like I did, along with all the history and WS championships in the old yard. Hasn’t talk to Lew yet about it. He’ll be gone in the off season cuz Lew hates it and he doesn’t. I like this Melvin guy already. It is different from the new shiny parks that’s for sure, and was always considered one of the best cookie-cutter parks from the 60’s/70’s.

  42. I wonder fi anyone asked Bob Melvin if he thought the A’s should play int he Coliseum indefinitely? Pretty sure he and Uncle Lew would agree on that one…
