KBWF May ratings plummet in SF market, rise in SJ

95.7 Sportsradio’s ratings took a 33% dive from 0.9 in April to 0.6 in May in the SF-Oakland market. Conversely, they rose 33% in San Jose from 0.6 to 0.8.

Ratings for the twin KNBR’s have stayed steady. As for still-in-receivership KTRB, it’s possible that their AM license may be turned back in to the FCC, a rarity in the business.

Going back to KBWF, it looks like Dan Dibley was brought in to cohost with the temporary guys in the morning/mid-morning, with the idea that he’d get his own show or cohost at some point. I think it’s time to take the training wheels off and let him do his thing. While they’re at it, bring in the “permanent” local talent.

  1. My take on the ratings is that San Jose has a number of people who are interested in a less-SF centric sports radio station. And that there might be more county listeners in SF/Oak than we might have thought. Definitely interesting numbers.

  2. first month of the all sports format, ratings are def heading in the wrong direction in sf and oakland market place. dropped almost half of the audience when they got a 1.1 in april albeit when they still had a country format and the their listeners were still tuning in. what is entercom thinking? i dont think after two months they think they made a mistake. that country format was heading downward and imo not getting back up. now will the sports format get better..imo it has nowhere to go but up at least the talent lineup is concerned. really is this the lineup that entercom or whoever runs the station thinks is THE LINEUP? i really hope not. tittle’s name has been mentoned for the last two months and so far there is NO indication that 95.7 is gonna hire him which is a HUGE mistake. tittle is the only local talent they’ve hired, not counting townsend. monty was picked up essentially off sporting news radio which is where he worked at. dickinson was picked off from 1140 in sac. jackson i don’t even know if he’s doing his show from the bay area. i thought i read somewhere that he’s based in d.c. that issac/suke was a total mess. i’m not even gonna get into rob/arnie and why they’re still on the air. add to that no night time host and imo the on air talent 6 weeks almost two months in isnt what i think most had hoped for.

a’s? lets face it, there was a reason they’ve been bouncing from station to station for much of the past dozen or so years. they don’t draw. they certainly aren’t drawing recently be it becuase of the poor product and or the total disgust of a lot of a’s fans towards this ownership group and front office which they believe has ruined ths org, purposedly or not because they wanna move to sj. they are doing better even in their first full month on 95.7 as a sports station than they ever did on 860 even with an 0.6. i think 95.7 is gonna have to add another major local sports team in the area to the station. raiders are the most likely one since their deal with 1550/ and 105.3 is i think ends after this upcoming 2011 season. w’s have been speculated but can’t see that happening. i don’t see any team leaving off the “knibber” to head off to 95.7.

  3. Scott Jackson works out of station 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C. I’m sure he’s a temp fix until 95.7 gets more local hosts.

  4. RM,
Does the Sharks occupying 95.7 have anything to do with the bump?

  5. dibley will get his own show, just don’t know where? will he take over for jackson going head to head against his former cohosts with radnich in the mid morning? will he be given the noon slot eventually if/when that current show is gone. night time host even though i think there is somebody else who could fill in that time slot.

i can live with the morning show, even though i’d like to see an actual a’s fan mixed into the group as monty is a cubs fan and dickinson a sf fan. will get better for football as monty is a raiders fan and will actually know a bit about what he’s talking about. jackson, yeah i think he’s a temp. maybe a reason why 95.7 chose sporting news radio over imo a better national sports outlet in fox sports radio since they hired a couple of former talents from sporting news in monty and jackson, jackson still doing his national show i think on weekends. rob/arnie, don’t know why they’re still here. even though rob i think is an a’s fan, the only one on the station that is, he and his other cohost don’t seriously take sports phone calls and more of a shock jock types. townsend imo is the only true keeper.

still waiting for the news that the station hires the likes of tittle, krueger, lamb, b.mcgowen and other LOCAL talents that people around here know, respect, and trust. heck i wouldn’t even mind giving a show to the likes of kawakami or poole…they imo couldn’t do any worse than jackson and rob/arnie.

  6. The morning show is getting really old, fast for me.

  7. @letsgoas: I actually agree with pretty much everything you said…I’m a truck driver so I listen to the radio a ton and I’m actually ok with Monty, JD, and Dibs in the morning…they’re meshing a little better but could really use more A’s talk…as for Scott Jackson and Rob/Arnie…they desperately need to go…Jackson literally puts me to sleep behind the wheel and he kind of holds Dibs back when it comes to on air talent. Dibs thrives under comedic improve and Jackson is the exact opposite. And Rob/Arnie are just plain horrible…IMO they should pair up Tittle and Dibs after the Monty show. Thats the only guy who can team up with Dibs to go toe to toe with the heavyweight Gary

  8. those morning guys talk about the giants way too much. I understand that they want to attract more than A’s fans, but jeez it is our flag station!

  9. i don’t know what you can expect out of a morning show? you’re not gonna get the hard core sports fan listening during that time of the day especially those first few hours so not expecting the classic sports call in show. i’d still listen to the 95.7 morning show over what 680 has, still can’t believe if that rumor was true that 95.7 tried to hire the 680 morning show. what were they thinking?

bruce? i think the chances are less likely than them going after tittle which at this time i have a bad feeling they won’t go after him. bruce seems to have held back recently, many saying he’s been defanged from the guy just a few years ago. now you could argue sf winning the world series, maybe he doesn’t go as hard after them as he used to but just an overall feel to his show which was a lot more edge has been gone in recent months. also just recently he’s been saying the a’s aren’t moving to sj according to what he’s been hearing but just months ago he said the best place for the a’s to stay in the bay area is san jose and thinks the a’s SHOULD move to sj in a couple of convesations i’ve had with him thru email. is he now a true knbr schill with his change of opinion on the a’s to sj in recent weeks or months?

i would like to see a tittle/dibley duo at 10-1 over what we have now but i would like to see each get their own show on 95.7 personally.

    monty/dickinson…6-10

    tittle…10-1

    townsend….1-4

    dibley/lamb or mcgowen…4-7

    krueger…7-10

^that’s still be at this time best case scenario for the local lineup leaving out bruce coming onboard which many would like to see a “fanged” bruce over what we’re listening to now but again, from how bruce is acting on air towards the sf and the a’s in particular, don’t know if he wants to leave 1050. although the ratings show 95.7 is beating 1050 so it’s not like he’s going to a lesser audience. maybe he just wants to keep his niners post game job although hell why wouldn’t 95.7 screw around with knbr like they did when kgo was the broadcast home of the niners and have bruce do his own post game show on 95.7 for the niners after games. heck he could do post game call ins for both niner and raider games on sunday. not like the current raiders radio post game show on 1550/105.3 last season took many phone calls anyways. he’d be working for 6-7 hours that day but i think somebody like bruce could do that. heck add dibley as cohost for niner post games and somebody like monty for raiders post games.

  10. I want a morning show that doesn’t have a Giants homer and a blowhard who talks out of his ass about sports. If it is not meant to draw hardcore sports fans, Monty makes even less sense.

  11. For the umpteenth time: Rick Tittle. That is all.

  12. Weird thing is their May format hurt them. After April they hardly talked about the A’s. Their new slogan should be “The Bay Area’s only FM Giants station.” Especially Monty that’s all he talks about. At first I was excited but lately every time I turn it on it’s all Giants. My co workers who aren’t the biggest baseball fans have said to me multiple times I thought this was the A’s new station but they only ever talk about the Giants.

Only the last week with firing Geren has either Monty or Jackson finally mentioned the A’s a lil.

I know A’s fans that were excited about the new station and have given up somewhat on turning on the station in the morning anymore cause it’s all Giants. Maybe that’s the reason in drop of ratings. Giants fans already listen to KNBR and aren’t switching, so they have no audience.

  13. there were two long stretches where it all a’s talk. the geren firing but also the fuentes-geren fuel.

adding tittle would certainly give the station an all a’s/east bay feel. but unlike 860 which had promos proclaming it as the east bay sports station, 95.7 hasn’t labeling themselves as an all bay area sports station. that’s cool in all but lets get real, sf sports fans will continue to listen to knbr for the most part. 95.7 can be a all sports station, they’ll never ignore the west bay teams like the other station does to the east bay stations, but they really need to cater to the east bay sports fans like the ticket 1050 did back a decade ago when they had hosts like jt the brick and frantz especially doing local shows. now the critics say look where that got 1050 but really are the ratings for 1050 better than they were back a decade ago?

again 95.7 even if they go all full board east bay sports, they won’t get anywhere near the ratings that 680 gets but if they can get in the mid to high 1 rating wise, think that’s a solid # i this market especially with 680 for the all of the past two decades being the only sports station in this area. it’s gonna take a while before 95.7 gets it’s footing and so far at least with the on air talent, they haven’t done imo a good job of it and until they do so, the ratings aren’t gonna be good…albeit they should still should be better than what 1050 does especially as i mentioned if they can add another team to the station like the raiders. what happened to cal as when the station first moved to an all sports format, there were reports they were going after either or both of cal/stanford. the latter eventually went back to 1050 but what about cal?

that’s the question, is entercom gonna be happy even with low or mid 1s down the road if they are entrinched as the #2 sports station here after 680 and above 1050? i seriously can’t believe they actually thought they could topple the 680 monster/machine.

    • Whoever decided it was a good idea to keep recycling the Posey incident over and over again lost me as a listener for at least an hour every time I tuned in and heard it.

  14. Agree ML- another example of bs lack of leadership that he didn’t publicly reprimand sabean for what he said about cousins- fact is Johnny Bench said posey blew it- hate to see posey get hurt- he is an awesome talent- but a catcher like JB’s word is respected v. Someone like sabean-

  15. not to mention you had idiot brynes rip bench the night bench made those statements.

yeah i’d take the word of a hof c, could argue the best c in mlb history over some guy who won’t even be a footnote in the game’s history. oh yeah other than maybe not touching home plate in game 3 of the 2003 alds!

  16. This may be lame, but I heard Monty and Dickinson making fun of Townsend this morning and I wanted to wretch. Townsend is the best sports talk show host in the Bay Area. His show is excellent. Monty and JD are not even in the same league.

  17. @Jeffrey, I agree on the morning show. Monty just isn’t witty enough so he has to go right to the base humor and its pretty cringe worthy. Is it really that hard to go out and get somebody like Ratto or Kawakami or Pappa, just give me a local familiar voice that knows better than to talk Gigantes religiously.

  18. and listening to Scott Jackson makes me want to go right sleep. Tittle’s delivery is boring as hell too but he loves the A’s and lets his callers talk and thats why he’s actually not boring.

  19. ratto gets his paychecks from csn, doubt he’ll be allowed to do a show on the “competition”. i actually think ratto is pretty solid when he does radio as a fill in, who knows if he can carry a show 5 days a week.

same with papa when it deals with who pays his checks. imo the only way he gets to host a show on 95.7 is if the raiders move to the station sometime in the near future or he splits from csn programming and starts a show on 95.7 like he did on 1050 almost a dozen or so years ago. if that would happen would he then go back doing a’s games, who knows, personally he’s built up a lot of bad blood from me as an a’s fan with the way he’s took shots at the org and even fans since becoming hosts of chron live. doesn’t help that he probably has control of what is being discussed each day and the a’s rarely get talked about if at all on chronicle live.

agreed about kawakami. he can talk about all the sports teams here and he’s no homer for any team. he seems at times to be quite of a slime ball but hey a lot associated with the media can be labeled that way across the country.

imo the only hosts who are legit are townsend and possibly dibley when he gets his own show. monty and dickinson i don’t hate or like, pretty neutral. if they stay, okay. if they’re replaced, don’t care that much either. but the other on air hosts can all go.

  20. oh that’s right CSN is owned by the Giants. Damn.

  21. 1/3 of it is owned just with knbr.

hope down the road the a’s can buy into csnca or into 95.7 if they were willing to spend up to 8 million on 860 and improving it, why wouldn’t they do the same with 95.7 also if the oppurtunity comes up.

  22. bs is a slimeball who has no spine. townsend said it best today, he wants to be a uniter and not one who wants to create controversy on a tough decision. he wants everybody to be happy with a decision he makes even when this decision is made in the end, you’re gonna have at least one side and many many people who disagree with the decision. you think everybody agreed with interleague play or the wild card added? does bs actually know the vast majority of those who follow the game of baseball hate him and thinks he’s a lousy commish.

i’m glad that 95.7 has exposed this farce not only today but in previous weeks. god knows you won’t get anywhere near this topic being discussed on any other major bay area media outlet especially on the sports outlets here locally that are in some way controlled by that bitch of an org across the bay.

a’s org, players and especially the fans deserve not only an answer soon but a new park in the next 3-4 years. tired of this waiting! does nothing but kill this a’s franchise slowly each year with fans being fed up with the situation all the way around from the moves the franchise made to how they view the league treating one the most on the field successful franchises in the league’s history like dogshit basically.

  23. Liked the concept today on the Townsend show to begin protesting for removing the tr restriction in front of AT&T- that would piss off bn and get slot more attention than an email campaign to bs

  24. Townie and Dibley are the only keepers.

  25. here we are two months exactly when 95.7 made the switch from country to full time sports and what do we have?

-not one a’s fan on air talking seriously about the team, again not counting rob. i can’t believe any station that is the flagship of a given mlb team that doesn’t have at least one fan of the team on it’s air even in the early stages of the radio station. the one guy who mostly everybody wants, tittle, no signs that he’s gonna be hired by the station. if/when 860 changes formats which will happen sooner rather than later, that about does it for tittle on the local air waves unless 95.7 hires him.

-still no night time host using sporting new radio from 6 pm when no baseball is airing to 6 am. so half the lineup is nationally stuff still.

-the one “local” talent brought in was dibley. out of all the radio talent available out there right now, did anybody think the day the station switched formats on april 15th that two months later that dibley would be the only local talent brought onto the station.

-the freakin WEBSITE IS STILL NOT RUNNING up to full capacity. we still get the same front page with just the lineup of the day and the phone # to the station that we’ve seen since the firat few days of the format change. heck when 860 switched formats back in the early stages of the 09 season, even though their website wasn’t the greatest, they had it running almost from the very start and didn’t have to wait 2+ months to see it up.

so far other than townsend and possibly dibley once he is given a show, i’ve been disappointed with how the station has been run. hey it’s nice to have an alternative to knbr but at times you wouldn’t know you wouldn’t be listening to knbr if you didn’t know the dial was on 95.7 during many points in the past two months.

i still hope what pries said on AAD maybe a month or so ago where what you’re hearing right now isn’t what necessarily is gonna be on air when the station is running at full strength. but does it need to take two months to make up a local and respected radio lineup. even though it was rushed, is this the best 95.7 could do?

i hope i’m eating my words 2-3 months from now.

  26. @LGAs – I recommend a nice walk outside in the fresh air and beautiful sunshine before you have a heart attack. It looks like your blood pressure might be a little too high.

  27. @Jeffrey – The morning guys were mimicking CT this morning at least a few times. It didn’t come across as negative, but it’s unnecessary. I think they are trying to be funny but it’s not working. Neither is their repetitive “funny” sound clips for that matter.

  28. I heard one of the times they mimiced him. I changed the station to NPR once Monty started in on his “Now we HAVE to talk about the Panda…”
    .
Most likely, I will be listening to NPR in the mornings until they get this stuff fixed. A Giants homer and a blowhard outweigh the awesome that DIbley brings. Hopefully, those two clowns will gone before long.

  29. The best available (no ties to the Giants) local personality has to be Drew Remenda. He’s been doing a general sports talkshow in Saskatoon for 7 years now, and listening to it, it sounds like a show that would work in the Bay Area. It’s intelligent, it’s humorous, it can be confrontational, it’s personality driven — all things that have been successful in this market.

And for the concerns that he’s a “hockey guy,” with doing a general sports show in the “Green Bay” of Canada, he’s gone from someone who didn’t know anything about the CFL to practically an authority on the subject, showing he is an old dog that can learn new tricks. Plus, he grew up on a golf course, his dad is in a Canadian hall of fame as a baseball umpire, he’s huge into MMA and personal training, and he’s associated with a winner in the Sharks.

And excluding local news anchors, Drew’s the only broadcaster I can think of who actually swayed ratings, as there was a significant ratings difference between the time Drew did the Sharks games, Marty McSorley did the games and then Drew returned to do the games — all the while the team’s performance on the ice remained about the same. Just bizarre. And a testament to his draw as a local personality (and maybe the repulsion of McSorley, but it’s still unprecedented).

Only real weakness (besides living in Canada, so it’ll take a few more bucks to get him to move) is he has very little respect for basketball, which is not good in this market. But this is where a co-host could provide balance while Drew provides the personality. Plus, it could be good for the W’s to have someone who plays hard to get for a change.

There are some interesting people on 95.7 now, but they’re either wrong for this market (Scott Jackson alone is too bland to carry a show in a competitive place like this) or have already failed in this market (Chris Townsend’s insincere enthusiasm plays better elsewhere), and unfortunately it appears it is going to take a little more than A’s baseball to get this thing started.

Like, giving Tom Tolbert a zillion dollars. Then we can listen to an Angel’s fan daily.

  30. I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Roxy Bernstein. I think he would do well on 95.7. He’s knowledgeable about all sports and would give the station a Cal slant. Cal gets little representation in the media (like the A’s, Raiders and Sharks.) There are over 200,000 Cal alumni living in the nine county Bay Area plus several hundred thousand more fans who aren’t affiliated with the school and yet there’s no station for Cal fans to call into. Plus, Bernstein knows A’s baseball pretty well.

  31. mentioned roxy more than a few times. he’s already been on 95.7 as sort of a cohost when townsend had his draft special the first day of the draft.

if ever 95.7 gets the rights to broadcast cal games, which was the reports the days following the format change that the station wanted to get either or possibly both cal and stanford on the station, then i could see roxy getting a on air job as he’s shown he can be an on air talent for a sports show being a cohost on jj/mouth on sportsbyline for almost a year i think.

question is why hasn’t there been any news about 95.7 landing cal when stanford months ago went back to 1050. i’ve said it before but 95.7 needs other sports on the station other than broadcasting a’s games. cal and or the raiders would ideal.
